Outback Rescue Challenge 2008

23 - 25 September 2008

Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia

Search and Rescue Challenge

The Search and Rescue Challenge was open to all amateur entries seeing teams of university students and hobbyists. In this competition, teams had to develop an autonomous UAV to fly out into a 3nm x 4nm search area about 3nm from the aerodrome. Outback Joe was located in the search area and the teams had to locate him with their UAV and then deliver an emergency assistance package to him.

With over 20 teams registering for the competition at the start of 2007, only 4 teams made it through all of the deliverables required throughout the year. These teams were:

  • Team Silvertone - hobbyists from USA and Australia

  • Dionysus - hobbyists from Chico California

  • SRUAV - undergraduate students from the Queensland University of Technology

  • iSoar - undergraduate students from the University of Adelaide

Two of these teams (iSoar and SRUAV) withdrew at the last minute due to technical and safety concerns as well as some unfortunate "mishaps".

In the end, no teams were able to fly out into the search area to locate Outback Joe.

Next year? Well Joe is still out there and in Australia you never leave a mate behind - so we have to go find him. Details will be placed on the website soon but if you are keen then please start preparing. Joe is still lost, at least until 2008, let's just hope we're not too late... oh and the $40,000 prize will jackpot to $50,000 for 2008!
