Example of the circuitry in an Inertial Measurement Unit.
IMS from http://openuav.astroplanes.com/ Complete Inertial Measurement System - 6 degrees of freedom, with built in GPS. OpenUAV's INS, developed by Astroplanes, utilizes the single IC triple axis accelerometer from Freescale MMA7260Q, 2 dual axis IDG300 MEMs gyroscope, 20 channel SiRF III GPS and a dual axis Honeywell magnetometer. Roll, Pitch, and Yaw gyro sensors, 3 tilt axis, 1Hz high sensitivity GPS, and two magnetic field readings (accelerometer reading can be used to offset tilt error). Unprecidented power in a single small footprint, low cost solution. Advanced firmware allows individual channels to be turned on/off, select different sensitivities on the accelerometers, and output type between either binary / ASCII formats. This INS comes fully assembled and tested. All sensors are soldered in place, JTAG programmers and free software development IDE's are available for download. $365 USD about: INS, 6 DOF & 20 channel GPS
