Welcome to the Grand Challenge:

• A major science and technology competition to find new ideas and innovation.
• A technology challenge directly relevant to the military challenges faced daily by UK Armed Forces.
• An opening into the UK defence market for new suppliers and investors.

The challenge is to create a system with a high degree of autonomy that can detect, identify, monitor and report a comprehensive range of military threats in an urban environment. The Grand Challenge is open to the whole UK science and technology base, large and small companies, research laboratories and academic science faculties. It is also a challenge to UK financial institutions to invest in UK. The MOD is keen to see the best solutions developed quickly into equipment for the UK Armed Forces.

Barnard Microsystems Limited develops  microwave circuit design software  and  designs Unmanned Aircraft Systems. We focus on the design and development of navigation, flight control, communications and sensor systems for use in oil, gas and mineral exploration, and in pipeline monitoring work.

We are pleased to be involved in the MoD Grand Challenge and will be using our background work in the monitoring of oil and gas pipelines to contribute an imaginative solution to the detection of threats faced by military personnel.

We are pleased to announce that the Barnard Microsystems (“BM”) Team has been selected as one of six Teams to receive funding from the Ministry of Defence,  to participate in the first MoD Grand Challenge competition, to be held in August, 2008. A total of  14 teams will take part in the competition.

The aim of the competition is to develop and deploy autonomous vehicles to detect snipers, Improvised Explosive Devices, a heavy gun on a pick-up truck and men dressed in military uniform. The above  histogram shows the general increase in  the  number of  visits, both unique and repeat,  to the Barnard Microsystems Limited web site in 2007 / 2008. During this period, the number of site visits increased from 604 in January 2007 to 9,773 in January 2008. 41,156 unique people visited the site in 2007, with 52,012 total visits taking place in 2007.
